Men’s Fútbol Trip to Guatemala
Eleven TLU men’s soccer student-athletes spent spring break in Guatemala learning about socially conscious business practices, meeting the locals and learning Fútbol.
The trip was the lab portion of KINS 319 Advanced Physical Conditioning and was organized and executed by TLU alumni José Alejandro and Jimmy Flores (VOS Flips) and led by TLU Soccer coach Eddie Salazar.
The trip served several purposes. Coaches and players compared the physical training methods and techniques of professional footballers to the methods used by TLU. The group gained a global perspective on humanitarianism—the group visited the VOS rubber plantation, met the workers and their children and learned about the give-back program between VOS and the plantation. The trip also provided an opportunity to strengenthen partnerships with private high schools in Guatemala in an effort to build a stronger relationship and improve recruitment efforts. And, the group immersed themselves into the local culture.
The week-long trip allowed the group to compare soccer training methods, interact with locals and enjoy the local culture and learn how socially conscious businesses can be both profitable and help the community. This multi-faceted, immersive learning experience is one the group will remember for a long time.
