Spring Choir Tour 2020
March 27 2020 - March 31 2020 7:00pm - 8:30pm
"Not A Breath Divides"
Under the direction of Dr. Douglas R. Boyer, director of the TLU School of Music and Choral Activities, the TLU Choirs will explore the eternal nature of love through a blend of sacred and secular choral music. The words of Ruth, in their traditional form, begin the program. Traditional works of Schubert and Mozart are contrasted with the music of our time by such composers as Craig Hella Johnson, Alice Gomez and John Tavener. "Not A Breath Divides."
At the heart of the program is the major choral work, "Not a breath divides…," by William Averitt. This work was commissioned for the Spring 2020 Tour by the TLU Choir. In this three movement work, Sara Teasdale texts are set with the accompaniment of a tango band. The texts contemplate the loss of a lover, but just as “His song brought love as April brings the bird… not a breath divides my love from me!” Students Hannah Grove (violin) and Kevin Borgfeld (double bass) join TLU pianists Deb Mayes and Cristina Castro (accordion) in these world premiere performances.
Also being premiered on tour is an arrangement of "Amarte Sólo a Ti, Señor," which is also scored for choir and tango band. The work utilizes the original Spanish text of Latin America paired with an English text pleading for peace, hope, and love among all people.
Near the end of the program are the words of Ruth once again; however, this time they are newly adapted and expanded by composer Susan LaBarr. The program concludes with three well-known tunes set in new and creative ways: "Amazing Grace," "Wayfaring Stranger," and "Joshua Fit de Battle of Jericho."
All performances are free and open to the public. No tickets required.
