Spring Choir Tour 2019
March 28 2019 - April 2 2019 7:00pm - 8:30pm
"What The Light Shines Through"
Under the direction of Dr. Douglas R. Boyer, director of the TLU School of Music and Choral Activities, the TLU Choirs will present a varied program featuring premiering works, world music, and both sacred and secular pieces on their spring 2019 tour. A message of peace, hope and love fills the Texas Lutheran University Choirs spring tour program, "What the Light Shines Through."
The Texas Lutheran University Treble Choir begins the program with "Peace Mass," a five movement work by composer Bob Chilcott. This work sets the five traditional movements of the mass in a fresh and modern style while also infusing beautiful moments of Gregorian chant. Bob Chilcott served as visiting composer/conducter with the TLU School of Music in January this spring. Mr. Chilcott worked with the three TLU Choirs, the TLU Community Music Academy Choirs and conducted the TLU Youth Choir Festival.
Kantorei Chamber Choir will perform works of Schubert, Jennings and William Averitt, including two hymn settings commissioned by the choir. William Averitt composed Two Hymn Settings on Folk Tunes of the British Isles for the TLU Choir in spring of 2013. The Texas Lutheran University Choir will perform Eric Whitacre’s "Five Hebrew Love Songs" with student violinist, Hannah Grove, and pianist Deb Mayes.
In addition, the TLU Choir will premiere two newly commissioned works on tour. "Song From the Road," music by Craig Hella Johnson and text by Michael Dennis Browne, is the result of a joint commission by a consortium of choruses to benefit the programs and services of Chorus America. As the composer states in his notes, “this piece is a gentle call to remembrance… a quiet call to return home to discover yourself and to rediscover our home with each other.” The final piece of the program, "What the Light Shines Through", is on a text by Jan Richardson with music by Susan LaBarr. The beautiful piece calls us to serve others on our life journey and become the embodiment of what the light shines through.
All performances are free and open to the public. No tickets required.
