Retired Bishops & Spouses Gathering
October 10, 2017 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM | Location: TLU Campus
On Tuesday, Oct. 10, TLU will host a gathering of retired ELCA Bishops and their spouses. The Retired Bishops and Spouses Gathering has been meeting every-other-year since the beginning of the ELCA. The Gathering moves around the country and is hosted by the retired bishops and spouses of a particular region.
The Gathering includes some speakers and presenters at each event. It includes times for worship and often involves visits to various institutions of the ELCA (like TLU) as well as historical or well-known tourist sites. Of course, there is plenty of time for conversation and catching up with each other.
This year the theme is "Commemoration of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation." They are being hosted by the Oblate Renewal Center in San Antonio, but will spend one morning at TLU, visiting the campus and worshiping in the chapel. In addition, Rev. Mitri Raheb, former pastor at Christmas Lutheran Church in Bethlehem and current president of Dar al-Kalima University in Bethlehem, will speak to the group, as well as to the TLU students in attendance.
Special thanks to Bishop Paul Blom and his wife Marie for bringing this prestigious group to TLU. Bishop Blom is the retired bishop of the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod, and the parents of two TLU alums, Sarah Slaughter (Blom) ’93 and Nathan Blom ’96. The 2019 Retired Bishops Gathering will be held in the Pacific Northwest.
