Arguably one of the greatest dramas ever written, Othello is a masterpiece of revenge, deception, jealous passion, and murder. Othello’s trusted associate Iago conspires to sabotage the love between Othello and his wife, Desdemona. When presented with false evidence, Othello’s rage and jealousy consumes him, leading to a tragic conclusion.
As with many of Shakespeare’s greatest works, Othello features memorable characters, action, language, and conflict. In the iconic character of Iago, Shakespeare created one of the most compelling villains in Western literature. In Othello and Desdemona he gave us a tragic pairing of unforgettable lovers. In addition, however, the themes of Othello distinguish the piece, as Shakespeare explores the dangers of unrestrained envy and our attitudes toward the outsider. These themes preserve the universal and timeless impact of the piece, resulting in a unique and gripping tale for the ages.
