John T. Masterson, Ph.D.
Executive Vice President and Provost
Dr. John T. Masterson, executive vice president and provost of Texas Lutheran University, grew up in the New York metropolitan area. He received his formal education from The College of Wooster (B.A.), Princeton Theological Seminary (M.Div.), and the University of Denver (Ph.D.).
For 22 years, Dr. Masterson served the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, rising through professorial ranks, and serving in several administrative capacities including associate dean of the School of Communication, interim dean of the Graduate School of International Studies, and vice provost for undergraduate affairs.
Masterson joined Texas Lutheran University as executive vice president and provost in 1999. In that capacity he has worked with TLU’s faculty and staff to restructure the curriculum, design a new first-year program, develop a coordinated program of academic support, lead strategic planning, and establish the Center for Professional Development and the Center for Servant Leadership. In his administrative role he oversees academic affairs, intercollegiate athletics, the Division of Student Life and Learning, the library, campus ministry, and information technology. He co-chairs the University Planning and Budget Committee, and often teaches a freshman class in communication studies.
During his career, Dr. Masterson has been the recipient of numerous awards for his teaching, scholarship, and service. He has written numerous scholarly papers and articles, and he is the author or co-author of five college textbooks, including the latest Chinese edition of
Communicating in Small Groups: Principles and Practices, published by Peking University Press.
Earlier this year, Dr. Masterson announced he will be retiring from his position at Texas Lutheran University, effective May 31, 2008.
Dr. Masterson will continue to play lead guitar for The Harleys, a for-charity-only classic rock band, do volunteer work, and ride his Harley Davidson with his wife.
Dr. Masterson is married to the former Nancy Sether, his high school sweetheart. They have two adult sons, John III of Missoula, Montana, and Noah of Alexandria, Virginia.
