SPANISH LANGUAGE

Alamo Heights High School, San Antonio, TX
Reader and table leader for the AP Spanish Language exam; College Board Endorsed AP consultant; regularly presents AP workshops, school district in-services, and sessions at national and area conferences on topics such as teaching reading comprehension strategies, creating role playing activities for fluency-building, developing writing skills across levels, and Vertical Teaming in world languages; received her M.A. in Applied Linguistics from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in Mexico City. Areas of interest include second language acquisition, immersion education, materials development and teacher education; member of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, serving on the local chapter board as co-coordinator for the National Spanish Exam.
THE FOCUS will be on the Claims and Evidence document for the AP Spanish Language exam; exploration of strategies to develop targeted skills; development of AP skills through vertical teaming with teachers at all levels; sharing successful activities from the past year; reviewing and discussing published materials for the AP Spanish Language course; and reflecting on teaching strategies for the coming year.
TOPICS INCLUDE using authentic materials for listening and reading; integrating skills for the formal speaking and writing tasks; preparing for the informal speaking and writing tasks; integrating grammar in the course; strategies for the multiple choice listening and reading sections of the test; using technology tools for language development; approaches to syllabus design; and topics specific to the Taxco area of Mexico..
TARGETED TOWARD experienced and inexperienced teachers.

SPANISH LITERATURE

22 years in education; 18 years as an AP/Pre-AP teacher
Membership in the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP), the Texas Foreign Language Association (TFLA), Houston Association of Independent Schools, AATSP Brazos Chapter; Who is Who Among American Teachers 2001 and 2006; David M. Underwood Distinguished Chair for Foreign Languages, 2004 and 2005; Co-authored the Nuevas Vistas AP Literature Preparation Book.
THE FOCUS will be on getting acquainted with the AP Literature exam and the College Board required list for the course. They will receive a copy of a curriculum guide and weekly plan and will discuss these materials as well as ways to teach literary works. Music and video samples relevant to AP Spanish Literature will also be explored
TOPICS INCLUDE teaching poetry, writing about literature, simulated reading of the 2007 AP Literature exam, curricular units development, and topics specific to the Taxco area of Mexico.
TARGETED TOWARD experienced and inexperienced teachers.
