ART STUDIO - CLOSED

THE FOCUS is to provide the participants with an overview of the Advanced Placement Studio Art Program, with emphasis placed on the development and strengthening of AP Studio Art courses in Drawing, 2-D Design, and 3-D Design. Participants will also have experience with hands-on studio activities designed to take back to the classroom.
TOPICS INCLUDE an introduction to the College Board's Advanced Placement program; a review of the College Board's mission of equity and excellence; distinguishing the three studio art portfolios – drawing, 2-d design, and 3-d design; discussion of new developments in AP – including a review of the course audit of AP studio art and the move to digital submissions; defining the three components of each studio art portfolio – quality, concentration, and breadth; ideas for developing work for the concentration and breadth components of the portfolios; grading the AP studio art portfolios – including an examination of the scoring guidelines and sample scoring session; sharing of best practices; and discussion of teacher resources – including College Board Advanced Placement materials, APcentral, books, internet sites, and museums.

YOU SHOULD BRING sample lessons (preferably with samples of images) to share with the group. Please bring these along as an electronic file (flash drive, CD, or email to chamananda@hotmail.com). Lessons will all be burned to CD for each participant at the end of the week. Also, basic supplies will be on hand for the studio activities, but if you have favorite brushes, pencils, pens or other media you prefer to work with, and can travel safely with, bring them along as well.
 
CALCULUS BC - CANCELLED

THE FOCUS will be an overview of both the structure and content for BC Calculus with a major emphasis on the BC only topics. It will include a study of the five major components: limits, rates of change, indefinite integrals, accumulation using definite integrals, and series.
TOPICS INCLUDE parametric, polar, and vector functions, improper integrals, applications of integrals to density and work, logistical differential equations along with Euler’s method and slope fields; series and Taylor’s theorem with Lagrange form of the remainder. As time permits, AB calculus topics will be addressed.

YOU SHOULD BRING a graphing calculator and any activities, special projects, worksheets, etc. that you want to share with others.
 
COMPUTER SCIENCE A & AB

THE FOCUS will be in four areas:1) the growing issue of teaching all the A-course topics in one year; 2) a deeper look at the new GridWorld Case Study after teaching it for one year, including sharing “best practices” for A and AB assignment in this area; 3) proven strategies to prepare students for the A and AB APCS Examination; and 4) a new electronic testing approach that has been in development for the last three years.    
TOPICS for inexperienced teachers include introducing Object Oriented Programming, static arrays and dynamic arrays, algorithms and informal algorithmic analysis. Topics for experienced teachers include a sequence of hands-on lab assignments to learn and teach the GridWorld Case Study, working with the new Stack, Queue and Priority Queue classes, Sets, Maps and formal algorithmic analysis with Big-O notation.

YOU SHOULD BRING materials to share. The workshop will include a designated time where teachers can share experiences of lab assignments, teaching strategies, and other useful materials.
 
ECONOMICS (MACRO AND MICRO)

THE FOCUS will parallel the economics requirements, scope, and sequences presented by the College Board.
TOPICS INCLUDE issues of supply and demand, aggregate models, business models, policy, international trade, and comparative advantage. The bulk of materials will cover macro concepts, with some emphasis on key micro topics. Graphing for both sub fields will be central. All major topics will be addressed. Teachers will learn strategies that save time and how to build a successful syllabus.

THE FOCUS is two-fold: 1) to help students know the language to be prepared for the language AP tests and 2) to train students to take the test itself and inform them as to how they will be graded.  
TOPICS INCLUDE discussing the most current exam and how it was graded, including practice grading and using the rubrics. Participants will be given ideas on how to help students prepare for all areas of the exam and we will create materials based on literature and film which can be used in their classes. This will definitely be based on practical ideas and participants will be asked to participate actively.

MUSIC THEORY

College Board consultant; presented at several AP Music Theory summer institutes and two-day workshops; reader for the AP Music Theory exam; developed a one-day workshop on vertical teams in music theory for the College Board; BME and MME from Texas Christian University; PhD from the University of Oklahoma.
THE FOCUS will be on 1) teaching strategies designed to develop student understanding of the materials and processes of music including visual and aural analysis, sight-singing, melodic and harmonic dictation, and composition; 2) creating a curriculum employing techniques and activities similar to those presented in the Vertical Teams Guide for Music Theory published by the College Board; 3) fostering significant critical, analytical and creative thinking skills; and 4) the synthesis of musical knowledge into usable musical understanding, especially with regard to music of the common practice period.
TOPICS INCLUDE finding one’s place: teaching tonal form; teaching non-harmonic tones; one thing leads to another: Teaching idiomatic part-writing; alignment of K-12 curricula: Should the twain ever meet?; the score as a teaching tool; knowing the score: teaching musical analysis; making music modern: introducing students to modern music; and composition lessons from Handel, Bach, Mozart and Haydn .

Also, if you have a syllabus or district curriculum which you follow, it would be helpful to bring these. PSYCHOLOGY
CONSULTANT: KAY MINTER

THE FOCUS is on the four themes:Exploring Data: Describing patterns and departures from patterns; Sampling and Experimentation: Planning and conducting a study; Anticipating Patterns: Exploring random phenomena using probability and simulation; and Statistical Inference: Estimating population parameters and testing hypotheses.
TOPICS INCLUDE experimental design: concepts and vocabulary for experiments including completely randomized, blocking and matched pair; sampling design; univariate data: graphical displays, numerical representations, comparison techniques; bivariate data: understanding concepts and interpretations of linear and non-linear regression; probability: basic probability rules, random variables ; probability distributions: binomial, geometric and normal distributions; sampling distributions: law of large numbers, central limit theorem, assumptions and calculations; inference: confidence intervals and hypothesis tests for means, proportions and multiple populations; chi-square and linear regression; techniques for reviewing for AP exam, and role of technology in enhancing AP Statistics.

THE FOCUS will be on developing teaching strategies to create a learning environment for student success on concepts needed for rigorous science courses. Emphasis will be on what is necessary to be successful on the AP Chemistry exam.
TOPICS INCLUDE an overview of the AP program and the AP Chemistry exam, appropriate scope and sequence, differentiation between AP and Pre-AP courses, recruitment of students into Pre-AP Chemistry, multiple-choice strategies, reaction predictions, atomic structure and periodicity, bonding and VSEPR, gas laws, nuclear chemistry (and relationship to kinetics), stoichiometry. Time will be allowed for sharing best practices, for discussion of concepts in the course, and for laboratory experiments. The latter will include a simple kinetics experiment, methods for determination of molar masses, titrations, ionic reactions, etc. If time allows, other topics will be determined by the group.

THE FOCUS will be on learning and applying strategies to teach Pre-AP skills in a manner beneficial to both teacher and student. Because of the seemingly infinite number of skills and ideas a Pre-AP English teacher is responsible for presenting, this course will narrow the focus to a manageable scope.
TOPICS INCLUDE the essential Pre-AP skills associated with poetry, rhetoric, vocabulary, grammar, writing, and style analysis. A portion of our time will also be dedicated to examining some creative and unconventional ways to help students develop their own voice in relationship to reading, discussing, and writing.

PRE-AP GEOGRAPHY HS

TARGETED TOWARD the inexperienced teacher (2 years or less), but all levels of experience are welcome.

PRE-AP US HISTORY MS

THE FOCUS is to assist Pre-AP teachers in developing lessons that prepare students for the challenges of AP courses in social studies. The sessions will provide opportunities for participants to learn a variety of instructional strategies that will motivate students and foster the development of skills necessary for success in subsequent history classes in high school and in college. Teachers will be active participants in the sessions and will engage in hands on activities and the sharing of ideas. Participants should come ready for an informative and intellectually stimulating week.
TOPICS INCLUDE settlement of the New World, American Revolution, Jefferson’s presidency, nationalism and economic expansion, and the Civil War along with ways to write a syllabus, journal writing, strategies for critical thinking, ways to take class notes, primary source analysis using APPARTS , OPTIC, and other acronyms, vocabulary cartoons and cartoon analysis, conceptual identifications, categories and generalizations, document-based questions, Socratic seminars and discussions, close reading techniques, ladders of questions, timed writings, rubrics, designing effective test questions, and interdisciplinary projects.
