Department of Mathematics and Computer Science
Department Mission Statement The mission of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science is to provide quality undergraduate education for TLU students. We stress developing the student’s ability to think analytically and independently in all problems whether or not they are mathematical. We pursue developing the student’s aptitude for mathematical reasoning so that the student will be prepared for the pursuit of knowledge and truth beyond the boundary of the classroom. As the department offers its courses, it strives to be a place where students and faculty can study and learn in a cooperative, supportive environment. The fields of mathematics, computer science, and information systems complement each other and work well together. This synergism carries over into the relationships between students and faculty members in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.
Computer Science
In addition to the obvious reasons for studying computer science, we believe the analysis of problems, the design of detailed algorithms, and the close attention to detail that the whole subject demands are excellent training for many of the challenges faced by people today.
Students study in the areas of algorithms, programming languages, data structures, software design, computer architecture, operating systems and networking. Several mathematics and statistics courses are required.
Courses Offered The department teaches all courses necessary for a solid computer science major. Special topics are also offered to keep current with new developments in computer science. In addition there are courses for students who develop a particular interest in a specialty area of computer science. Independent study in specialty areas is an option for advanced students.
Other Options The department also offers a bachelor of science degree in information systems. This degree requires course work in computer science and business. This is a degree that appeals to many students whose primary interest is applying their computing skills in a business environment.
Experiences - Many students work for the information technology department.
- Students can serve as tutors and graders for computer science.
- Students also can enroll in one or more internships.
Career Opportunities Computer science offers a wide selection of rewarding career opportunities, including programming, systems analysis and database management. Various industries employ computer science majors, such as business, government, hospitals and schools.
ACM Student Chapter TLU students have formed a chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery, allowing them to present papers in ACM-related events and conferences.
