Department of Mathematics and Computer Science
In addition to the obvious reasons for studying computer science, we believe the analysis of problems, the design of detailed algorithms, and the close attention to detail that the whole subject demands are excellent training for many of the challenges faced by people today.
Students study in the areas of algorithms, programming languages, data structures, software design, and computer architecture. A substantial amount of mathematics and statistics are required, as are courses in logic and technical writing.
Courses OfferedThe department teaches all courses necessary for a solid computer science major. Special topics are also offered to keep current with new developments in computer science. In addition there are courses for students who develop a particular interest in a specialty area of computer science. Independent study in specialty areas is an option for advanced students.
Other OptionsThe department also offers a bachelor of arts degree in information systems. This degree requires course work in computer science and business. This is a degree that appeals to many students whose primary interest is applying their computing skills in a business environment.
Experiences - Many juniors and seniors work for the information technology department.
- Students also are able to tutor in the computer labs.
- Students in the software engineering class customarily create software of such high quality that it is regularly used by the university.
- Students also can enroll in one or more internships.
Career OpportunitiesComputer science offers a wide selection of rewarding career opportunities, including programming, systems analysis and database management. Various industries employ computer science majors, such as business, government, hospitals and schools.
ACM Student ChapterTLU students have formed a chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery, allowing them to present papers in ACM-related events and conferences. In addition, the TLU's ACM chapter hosts programming contests for local high school students.
