Congregational Aid Program

Texas Lutheran University is a ministry of the congregations of the Southwestern Texas, Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast, and Northern Texas-Northern Louisiana Synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Our mission as a four year residential university is to provide a high quality undergraduate education in a setting that is distinctively Lutheran.

The Congregational Aid Program (CAP) is a partnership between TLU and local congregations. Through this partnership, the local congregation encourages qualified students to attend this university. The program is open to congregations of the ELCA and its full communion partners. The program provides a monetary grant to each TLU student from a participating congregation. The size of the grant is based on the level of membership the congregation selects.

To qualify the student must meet two requirements: they must be a member of a participating CAP congregation, and they must be accepted and enroll as a full-time student at the Seguin campus of TLU. Additional forms of financial aid based on financial need or academic merit are also available to CAP recipients.

Membership Options

  • Level 1 – the congregation contributes $1 per confirmed member during each year of participation. In turn the college awards each student from the participating congregation a grant of $300 each year of enrollment - $150 for the fall semester, $150 for the spring. The maximum a student can receive is $1,200 over eight semesters.
  • Level 2 – the congregation contributes $2 per confirmed member each year with awards increasing to $600 for the year - $300 for fall semester, $300 for spring. Maximum award is $2,400 over eight semesters.
  • Level 3 – the congregation contributes $4 per confirmed member per year and each student receives $1,000 per year - $500 for fall semester, $500 for spring. Maximum award is $4,000 for eight semesters.

Timeline for the Program
Congregations wishing to participate in CAP should include funds for the program in their annual budgeting process. Enrollment forms will be mailed to all congregations in the spring. Contributions should be received in the Church Relations Office of TLU by May 31st of each year to fund students attending in the fall of that year. For those already enrolled in CAP, TLU will assume continued membership in the program from year to year unless notified otherwise. For those continuing their participation, TLU will send the congregation an invoice during the spring as a reminder. For any questions concerning the program, please contact the director of church relations.
