Department of Business Administration and Economics
An Arts and Sciences FoundationThe Texas Lutheran business program is special because it exists within the enriching environment of a broad-based education. Approximately half of a business student’s course work is taken outside the business department. Based on this integration with the arts and sciences, the program prepares graduates for lifelong learning and leadership in a fast-changing world.
The Business ProgramBuilt on the solid foundation of an arts and sciences program, the business program is state-of-the-art. The program uses real cases, lively presentations, and dynamic simulations, as well as individual and group activities. The six areas of professional concentration – accounting, economics, finance, international business, management, and marketing – expand on this arts and sciences base.
The 5 Year Accounting ProgramBusiness students who want to major in accounting can pursue our 5 year accounting program. In this program, students receive a BS in accounting and a BBA with an accounting specialization. Graduates are eligible for the CPA exam and entry into the accounting profession.
An Undergraduate CommitmentWhile TLU frequently is included in lists of the 10 best regional colleges, the business program itself may be one of the best offered by a liberal arts college in Texas. Texas Lutheran believes it offers an innovative program of exceptionally high quality. All of the university’s and the department’s resources are devoted to the undergraduate program.
There is no graduate program and there are no teaching assistants. The average class size is about 20.
Internship OpportunitiesBusiness students have many opportunities to work for local, regional, and international companies. These internships offer real-world work experience that helps students develop professional skills before they enter the workforce.
The faculty is committed to maintaining an excellent program by:
- Providing a dynamic business curriculum, grounded in theory and enhanced by classroom application and real-world experience,
- Developing use of accounting and quantitative tools and techniques,
- Encouraging critical thinking, creativity, and responsible ethical and social considerations,
- Expanding analytical ability and interpersonal skills,
- Providing maximum student accessibility to an experienced and well-qualified faculty,
- Maintaining a personal concern for each student.
Economics and Management Information Systems MajorsIn addition to the six concentrations within the business major, the business department offers a major in economics. And the Math and Computer Science department offers a major in information systems.
The business program is accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs, and is a member of the Southern Business Administration Association.
