DALLAS – The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs are bringing back two American Southwest Conference Championship trophies to Seguin after sweeping the conference women’s and men’s golf titles Tuesday.

At Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in Dallas, the TLU women ended Mary Hardin-Baylor’s run of seven consecutive ASC Championships. The ASC title is the first conference championship in school history for the TLU women’s golf team.

The TLU women, with a two-round team score of 669, posted a seven-shot victory over the Crusaders (676). TLU led by three shots after Monday’s opening round.

Four Bulldog golfers – freshman Carly Hansen (tie for second), freshman Angela Aufderhaar (fifth), senior Brynn Waggoner (tie for eighth), and freshman Sarah Thompson (tie for eighth) – placed in the top 10.

Hansen and Aufderhaar earned spots on the ASC All-Conference First Team. Waggoner and Thompson made the ASC All-Conference Second Team.

On the men’s side, TLU repeated as the conference team champion. Led by freshman Ryan Kiel (Seguin/Seguin), who won the individual title by two shots, the Bulldogs held on for a five-shot win over McMurry.

Both TLU teams earned automatic berths to the NCAA Division III Golf Championships by winning the conference championships.

“The women’s team came out today and really wanted to get the win,” said H.C. Tran, TLU head coach for women’s and men’s golf. “They worked really hard at it. They kept their heads together and came out and did it. They have accomplished a lot this year.”

The TLU men took a 10-shot lead over second-place Hardin-Simmons into Tuesday’s final round. TLU held a 24-shot advantage over McMurry entering the final round and nearly needed it all. McMurry shot a 288 over the last 18 holes and shaved 19 shots off the TLU lead.

“Ryan pretty much dominated and gave us a big lift,” said Tran. “Tanner played great and also gave us a boost, especially with his 67 in the second round. The boys wanted it this second title very badly.”

“They played the course instead of just hitting the long drive. I’ve been preaching to them, ‘Just play the course.’ It’s not about how long you drive. They did that this tournament, and it really paid off. I’m very proud of both of the teams. We couldn’t be happier.”

Kiel posted the two-shot win over LeTourneau’s Patrick Palmer. Kiel carded scores of 69 and 70 on Monday and shot a 76 on Tuesday. Kiel kept the ASC men’s individual title in TLU’s possession. Bulldog Michael Faterkowski, a four-time All-ASC performer, won the 2006 individual championship. Kiel joined Faterkowski and Ray Garza (2002) as Bulldogs with individual ASC titles.

The TLU women won the championship with a lineup that included three freshmen – Aufderhaar of Seguin (Seguin), Hansen of Coleraine, Minn. (Greenway) and Thompson of Beaumont (Hardin-Jefferson) – with senior Waggoner (Austin/McNeil) and sophomore Andrea Ramirez (Hondo/Hondo).

The men’s team included the freshman Kiel and four juniors: Tanner Carter (Boerne/Boerne), A.J. Vesey (Sugar Land/Clements), Jonathan Swisher (Laredo/Alexander) and Neil Simpson (Boling/Boling). Vesey and Simpson were the two hold-overs from five golfers that won the 2006 ASC Championship.

Carter tied for third with scores of 75, 67 and 76. Simpson and Swisher finished in 21st and 22nd, respectively, and Vesey tied for 24th.

By virtue of their top-five individual placements, Kiel and Carter earned spots on the ASC All-Conference First Team.

The 2007 golf season marked the first time that conference champions earned automatic bids to the NCAA Championships. In previous years, teams were chosen by a selection committee, with conference champions not receiving automatic qualification. Other bids to the national tournament are possible for teams not playing in a conference or for teams not winning conference titles.

The TLU women will make their first-ever team appearance at the national tournament. The TLU men will make their third consecutive appearance at the national championships. The Bulldogs have finished 12th in each of the last two national tournaments.

The NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championships will take place May 8-11 at El Campeon Golf Course at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Flor. Oglethorpe University and the Central Florida Sports Commission will serve as championship hosts.

The NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships will be held May 15-18 in Fishers, Ind., at Hawthorns Golf and Country Club and in Carmel, Ind., at Prairie View Golf Club. Anderson University  and the Hamilton Country Convention and Visitors Bureau will serve as championship hosts.
