SEGUIN, Texas – The Texas Lutheran baseball team rebounded from an early 8-1 deficit to post a 19-8 victory Thursday over Schreiner University.
At TLU’s Katt-Isbel Field, Schreiner hit two-run and three-run homers in the first inning to jump out to a 5-0 lead after the first half inning. The Mountaineers’ lead hit 8-1 in the fourth inning.
The Bulldogs pushed across four runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to close the gap to 8-7. TLU took the lead for good with an eight-run seventh inning.
Kyle Harvey (Houston/Houston Christian), Ryan Nokelby (Santa Fe, Texas/Santa Fe) and Jeremy Macklin (Austin/Bowie/Huston-Tillotson) each homered for the Bulldogs.
Harvey hit a grand slam in the eighth, and Nokelby had a three-run shot in the seventh. Nokelby was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBI.
Macklin, who went 4-for-5 with three runs scored, hit a two-run home run in the fifth. The blast to left-center was Macklin’s 10th of the season. The senior now has 57 RBI (in 32 games played) and a .470 batting average.
TLU improved to 24-11 overall and to 12-4 in the ASC West Division. Schreiner dropped to 14-17 overall and to 7-9 in the ASC West.
The Bulldogs entered Thursday’s game with a one-game lead in the ASC West over Hardin-Simmons and McMurry.
TLU freshman right-hander Brad Orosey improved to 8-1 with the pitching win. He recovered from the first four innings to pitch eight innings. He struck out eight and walked one.
Roger Ayala (4-3) took the loss for Schreiner. He pitched six innings and allowed nine runs (seven earned). He struck out six and did not walk a batter.
TLU collected a total of 21 hits. Chris Green (Austin/Bowie/Concordia Texas) also had four hits for the Bulldogs. Clay Childress (Houston/Jersey Village/Eastfield JC) scored three runs, had two hits, and two RBI. Andrew Femath (El Paso/Montwood/Howard JC) collected two hits, two runs and two RBI.
