GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs received one-run relief from four pitchers and two separate RBI doubles from Drew Farr in a 5-3 road victory Tuesday over Southwestern University.
TLU moved its overall record to 23-11 with the non-conference win over Southwestern. The Pirates dropped to 15-17 overall. TLU swept both games against Southwestern in 2009.
Louis Lee (Cypress/Cypress Christian/Eastfield JC) started for TLU and went two innings before handing the ball to a quartet of Bulldog relievers – Patrick Pederson (Pearland/Pearland), Ian Compton (Llano/Llano/Eastfield JC), Jeremiah Steinert (Sugar Land/Dulles) and Tom Hembree (Burnet/Burnet).
Pederson, Steinert and Hembree worked a combined 5-1/3 innings and allowed just two hits and no runs. Pederson (2-0) picked up the win, and Hembree pitched the ninth for his second save.
After the Southwestern lead-off hitter in the ninth reached on an error, Hembree retired the next batter and then coaxed the Pirates into a 5-4-3 double play to end the game.
The Bulldogs took the lead for good with a three-run second inning. The three runs scored on four hits, and the RBIs came from a Landon Lee (Cypress/Cypress Fairbanks) single, a Kyle Harvey (Houston/Houston Christian) hit-by-pitch, and an Andrew Femath (El Paso/Montwood/Howard JC) fielder’s choice.
The Bulldogs’ final two runs came on the Farr doubles. Batting as the designated hitter, Farr doubled in the fifth to score Femath. Farr then doubled in the seventh to score Ryan Nokelby (Santa Fe, Texas/Santa Fe). Farr was 3-for-5 against the Pirates.
Mark Noggle hit a solo home run in the second inning for the Pirates.
Chris Churchwell took the loss for Pirates and fell to 2-3. It was the second loss of the season against TLU for Churchwell.
TLU returns to American Southwest Conference action this Thursday and Friday with a three-game home series against Schreiner University. TLU, the ASC West leader at 11-4, plays Schreiner in a 9-inning game at 2 p.m. Thursday and in a 1 p.m. Friday doubleheader. All three games will be played at TLU’s Katt-Isbel Field.
