SEGUIN, Texas – Texas Lutheran right-hander Travis Staggs pitched a complete game and led the Bulldogs to a 3-2 American Southwest Conference victory over Concordia Texas, Friday afternoon at TLU’s Katt-Isbel Field.
Staggs (3-1) allowed only one earned run, struck out five and walked one.
The Bulldogs needed a strong performance from Staggs, a junior from Elmendorf (Southside/Western Texas JC), because Concordia Texas starter Matt Coburn was just as impressive.
Coburn struck out 11 and did not walk a batter in eight innings. Two of the three runs against him were earned.
TLU improved to 11-5 overall and to 1-0 in the ASC with the victory. Concordia Texas dropped to 9-7 overall and to 0-1 in the ASC.
Chris Siniff (San Antonio/Judson) drove home two of the three Bulldog runs. Siniff singled in the fifth to give TLU a 1-0 lead. He singled again in the seventh to put TLU up 3-1.
Drew Farr (Taylor/Taylor) led off the Bulldog seventh with a double. After a Ryan Nokelby sacrifice bunt moved Farr to third, Clay Childress doubled home Farr. Siniff’s single with two outs dropped in front of a diving Nick Cmerek in right field.
Chad Thielepape hit a solo home run for Concordia with one out in the eight. Thielepape was 3-for-4 on the day.
Concordia threatened in the ninth when Micah Runnels walked with one out. But Staggs and the Bulldogs closed the door with a game-ending double play turned by shortstop Chris Green (Austin/Bowie/Concordia Texas) and second baseman Andrew Femath (El Paso/Montwood/Howard JC).
TLU and Concordia Texas play a noon doubleheader Saturday at Katt-Isbel Field. TLU will have live stats and live audio webcasts of both games.
