Westmont cruises past TLU men's basketball

SEGUIN, Texas – Sophomore forward Dan Rasp scored all 18 of his points in the first half and led Westmont College (Calif.) to an 84-60 non-conference win over Texas Lutheran University on Wednesday evening in TLU’s Memorial Gymnasium.

Westmont, an NAIA school from Santa Barbara, Calif., improved to 3-1 overall.

TLU, a member of the NCAA Division III, dropped to 0-2.

Westmont opened a 48-30 halftime lead and led by as many as 27 in the second half.

Rasp took all of 13 shots in the first half and made nine. He also grabbed six rebounds in 23 minutes of action.

The Warriors out-rebounded Texas Lutheran by 32, 57 to 25. Westmont had 21 offensive and 36 defensive rebounds.

Evan Haines led Westmont with 11 rebounds, and seven other Warriors had at least four rebounds. Haines also recorded two blocks.

Andrew Schmalbach added 11 points and four rebounds, and Boerne native Tyler Dutton scored 10 points and added four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Westmont point guard Christopher Jackson had nine assists in the first half and finished the game with 11.

TLU received 17 points from senior shooting guard Nate Walton (Houston/Westside). First-year point guard Michael Flores (Spring/Klein Collins) added 10 points and three rebounds.

TLU made just 24 of its 63 shot attempts (38.1 percent). The Bulldogs were 3-of-18 (16.7 percent) from the three-point line and 9-of-18 (50 percent) from the foul line.

TLU opens American Southwest Conference play this Saturday with a 3 p.m. home game against the University of Texas-Tyler. The women’s game between TLU and Texas-Tyler starts at 1 p.m.
