Bulldogs play TAMUK tough, but fall 82-71

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs played NCAA Division II Texas A&M-Kingsville tough on the road Saturday before ultimately falling to the Javelinas 82-71 in the Steinke Center in Kingsville, Texas.

Senior forward Josh Scott (The Woodlands/The Woodlands) led TLU with 17 points. Junior forward Tyler Wanek (Fredericksburg/Fredericksburg) added 11 points.

TAMUK’s Robert Williams led all scorers with 23. He hit nine of his 10 field goal attempts, and he added eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals.

The Javelinas’ Flavio Milam (15), Anthony Jones (13) and Clyde Johnson (10) all scored in double figures. Johnson also grabbed eight rebounds.

The Javelinas out-rebounded TLU 33-19 and led in second-chance points 16-4. TAMUK out-scored TLU 46-24 in the paint and 10-2 in fast break points.

TLU held a six-point lead early in the first half and trailed by five, 39-34, at the break. TAMUK opened the second half with a 30-10 run that put the Bulldogs in a 25-point hole.

The Javelinas hit 62.1 percent of their shots in the second half and finished the game with a shooting percentage of 57.1.

The Bulldogs shot 55 percent in the first half and 48 percent in the second. For the game, the Bulldogs hit 23-of-45 shots (51.1 percent) and 23-of-31 free throws (74.2 percent).

TLU cut the lead down to 13 with two minutes to play in the game before ultimately losing the non-conference contest by 11.

TAMUK improved to 1-2 with the victory. TLU dropped to 0-1. TLU, a member of the NCAA Division III, plays in the American Southwest Conference. The NCAA Division II Javelinas play in the Lone Star Conference.

TLU plays its home-opener Wednesday when it hosts NAIA school Westmont (Calif.) at 7:30 p.m. in TLU’s Memorial Gymnasium.
