SEGUIN, Texas – The Trinity (Texas) women and the Centre (Ky.) men claimed NCAA Division III South/Southeast Region Championships Saturday at Texas Lutheran University.
At the Texas Lutheran Cross Country Course on the TLU campus, the Trinity women edged Emory (Ga.) by eight points, 43 to 55. Trinity put all five runners in the Top 20 and had three runners in the Top 10.
Trinity’s Emily Loeffler, Liz Eder and D’Ann Arthur finished second, third and seventh, respectively.
Taylor Stephens of Rhodes won the women’s race with a time of 21 minutes, 55.3 seconds. Loeffler crossed the line in 22:16.1
The Centre men placed four runners in the first 11 finishers and downed Emory by 17 points, 56 to 73.
Chase Wilson of Centre won the regional with a time of 25:23.7. David Woodson of Christopher Newport was second, six seconds behind Wilson at 25:29.7.
The top two teams qualify for the NCAA Championships, as well as the top seven individuals not on those two teams.
The Trinity and Emory women and the Centre and
Emory men will represent the South/Southeast Region at the NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships, to be held Saturday, Nov. 22, at the L.S. Ayres Complex in Hanover, Ind. Hanover College is the host of the championships.
The women's individual national qualifiers are: Taylor Stephens of Rhodes, Lolly Plummer of Hendrix, Hayley Sullivan of Mary Washington, Cybil Covic of Rhodes, Jessica Shaw of Washington & Lee, Elizabeth Webb of Washington & Lee, and Amy Wampler of Christopher Newport.
The men's individuals are: David Woodson of Christopher Newport, Ricky Flynn of Lynchburg, Bryant Wright of Trinity, Ben Donnan of Texas-Tyler, Ken Wheeler of McMurry, Warren Brown of Texas-Tyler, and Mark Handelman of Rhodes.
The Texas Lutheran women finished 20th out of 24 teams in the regional race with a team score of 504.
TLU junior Tiffany Wetz (Spring Branch, Texas/Bracken Christian/UT-San Antonio) was the top finisher for the Bulldogs and the American Southwest Conference. Wetz crossed the line in 25:15.8.
TLU was fourth in the team race among ASC teams. Conference champion Mississippi College (393) finished 13th, and Texas-Tyler (468) and McMurry (471) placed 16th and 17th, respectively.
