SEGUIN, Texas – The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs will host the NCAA Division III South/Southeast Regional Cross Country Championships this Saturday in Seguin.
The entire 6,000 meter women’s course and the 8,000 meter men’s course are located on the TLU campus. The men’s race starts at 9 a.m., and the women’s race begins at 10 a.m.
Admission is free to the public.
The men’s race will have 221 individual runners representing 28 different colleges and universities through the South and Southeast Regions of the NCAA Division III.
The women’s race will have 229 individual runners representing 31 different colleges and universities.
The women’s cross country team for TLU will run at the regional meet. The Bulldogs were fourth at the 2008 American Southwest Conference Championships on Nov. 1. The ASC Championships also were contested on the TLU campus.
TLU finished 20th in the South/Southeast Region in last season’s race, contested at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va.
Defending regional champions Rhodes (Tenn.) for the men and Emory (Ga.) for the women will be on hand for title defenses. Rhodes edged Emory and the University of Texas at Tyler for the men’s title one year ago. Rhodes and Emory each scored 76 points, but Rhodes won on a tiebreaker. UT-Tyler finished with 77 points.
The Emory men enter the regional race as the 12th-ranked team in NCAA Division III. Centre (Ky.) is ranked 34th in the country.
Emory slipped past Trinity (Texas) for the women’s crown in 2007. The margin of victory was two points, 52 to 54.
Washington & Lee (Va.) is the highest ranked women’s team out of the South/Southeast Region. The Generals are 28th in the NCAA DIII and the top-ranked team in the region. Emory is 33rd in the country and second in the region. Trinity is ranked third in the region.
Seven of the Top 10 women’s regional individual runners from 2007 are scheduled to compete Saturday at the 2008 Championships. Defending women’s individual champion D’Ann Arthur of Trinity will defend her title. Arthur won in 2007 with a 6K time of 23 minutes, 1 second.
The women’s Top 10 from 2007 was separated by 32 seconds.
Seven of the Top 10 top men’s finishers from 2007 also return. Defending regional champion R.J. Cowan of UT-Tyler is set for his title defense. Cowan won the 8K regional title in 2007 with a time of 26:02. He edged teammate Ben Donnan by three seconds.
The men’s Top 10 from 2007 was separated by 21 seconds.
Cowan raced on this same TLU course two weeks ago, in the 2008 American Southwest Conference Cross Country Championships, and finished third. Cowan’s teammate Warren Brown won the ASC title with a time of 26:06. Cowan recorded a time of 26:29.5. Donnan is listed on the UT-Tyler entries for Saturday’s regional race, but he did not race two weeks ago in the ASC Championships. Donnan won ASC titles in 2006 and 2007.
