UMHB edges TLU women's soccer 2-1

SEGUIN, Texas – Mickie Arredondo’s goal in the 63rd minute lifted the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor to a 2-1 victory over Texas Lutheran on Friday in the American Southwest Conference opener for both squads.

UMHB improved to 2-2 overall and to 1-0 in the ASC.

TLU dropped to 2-3 overall and to 0-1 in the ASC.

Arredondo’s goal broke open a 1-1 tie. TLU had evened the match just 3-1/2 minutes earlier with a goal from Sunny Valencia (Spring/Klein). The Valencia goal was assisted by Kristin Meloni (San Antonio/Madison).

Arredondo’s match-winner was assisted by Brooke Magers.

UMHB took the lead six minutes into the second half with a goal from Erin Salyer, off an assist from Angel Kemmerer.

UMHB out-shot TLU 17-9, and the Cru led in shots on goal 11-4.

Allyson Sargeant made three saves for UMHB, and Marlena Ashby (Marble Falls/Marble Falls) and Kim Myhre (Round Rock/Stony Point) combined for nine saves. Ashby started in goal for TLU before moving to midfield. She had six of TLU’s nine saves.

The Bulldogs continue conference play Saturday with a 2 p.m. match against Howard Payne at TLU’s Gustafson Field.
