SEGUIN, Texas – The McMurry women’s basketball team closed out Thursday’s 85-64 American Southwest Conference victory over Texas Lutheran with a 28-11 run.
McMurry kept its lead in the ASC West and improved to 19-5 overall and to 16-4 in the conference.
TLU dropped to 7-17 overall and to 5-15 in the ASC West.
TLU trailed by eight, 41-33, at the half and closed within four points, at 57-53, with 9:14 to play in the game. Jennifer Munoz (San Antonio/Brackenridge) nailed a three-pointer to cap a quick 6-0 run for the Bulldogs.
With TLU within four points, McMurry responded with an immediate 10-0 run. Ashley Stephens scored on a three-point play and added a lay-up in the surge, and Amber Horton tossed in a steal, a three-pointer and a lay-up.
Horton, who did not play in the teams’ first meeting of the season, scored 23 points and added six steals, four assists and four rebounds. Stephens collected 13 points and five rebounds off the McMurry bench.
TLU received 19 points from freshman guard Kimberly Hagan (Houston/Cypress Creek) and 16 points from Munoz, who was 7-for-8 from the field and 2-for-2 from the three-point line.
Courtney Haskell (San Antonio/Southwest) grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and blocked four shots. Haskell’s four blocks give her 49 blocks on the season. She now shares the TLU single-season blocks record with Freda Williams, who blocked 49 shots in the 1997-98 season. Haskell has one game remaining in the 2008-09 season.
Haskell, a sophomore, now has 93 career blocks. The TLU career blocks record, held by TLU Hall of Famer Dawn Revels, is 102.
