SEGUIN, Texas – Texas Lutheran’s desperation three-pointer at the buzzer bounced off the front rim to preserve Mary Hardin-Baylor’s 75-72 victory Thursday at TLU’s Memorial Gymnasium.

Jocelyn Langford (Omaha, Neb./San Antonio Clark) let fly a 30-foot shot that appeared on line. But for the second time at home this season, a last-second three-pointer miss by the Bulldogs denied the young team a victory.

UMHB moved to 11-11 overall and to 10-8 in the American Southwest Conference with the victory. The win snapped a five-game losing skid for the Crusaders.

TLU dropped to 7-15 overall and to 5-13 in the ASC.

UMHB rolled to a 41-23 halftime lead by shooting 43.8 percent from the field and holding TLU to a shooting mark of 26.7 percent. TLU was 8-for-30 from the floor (and 2-of-8 from the three-point line) in the first half.

TLU’s shooting heated up in the second half, especially from the three-point line, where the Bulldogs made seven of their final 11 long-range attempts.

Freshman wing Kimberly Hagan (Houston/Cypress Creek) scored 16 of her 18 points in the second half. She made five of her six field goal attempts, including all four of her three-pointers. She also grabbed six rebounds.

Hagan’s fourth three-pointer of the half, with 51 seconds to play, brought TLU within two, at 72-70.

The Bulldogs fouled Landie Thompson on the ensuing UMHB possession, and Thompson made one of two free throws. On the second shot, a miss, Jessica Kelly grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled. Kelly went to the line and made both free throws to put UMHB up five with 21 seconds remaining.

TLU scored quickly on the other end with a lay-up by Tamisha Timpson (San Antonio/Roosevelt), and TLU fouled Kallie White, who missed both free throws to set up Langford’s final heave.

TLU’s Timpson led all scorers with 26 points. The freshman forward also recorded 11 rebounds, four assists, four steals and a block. She made nine of her 15 shots attempts, and she was a perfect 4-for-4 from the three-point line.

Courtney Haskell (San Antonio/Southwest) added nine rebounds, six points, a block and two steals. The one block gave Haskell 45 blocks for the season, moving her within five of setting the new TLU school record for single-season blocks.

UMHB put four players in double figures. Landie Thompson came off the bench to score 13 points and grab 10 rebounds. She also dished out three assists and blocked three shots. Kelly scored 11, and Jenny Black and Miranda Shorter each contributed 10 points. Black provided seven rebounds (four on the offensive glass).

TLU hits the road for its next conference game, a 1 p.m. Saturday match-up at Concordia Texas in north Austin.
