ALPINE, Texas – The Texas Lutheran women’s basketball team completed a season sweep of Sul Ross State with a 74-63 American Southwest Conference victory Thursday at Sul Ross State’s Gallego Center.
TLU (7-13, 5-11 ASC) jumped out to a 19-2 lead and never trailed in the game.
Sul Ross dropped to 0-19 overall and to 0-16 in the ASC.
Amy Doyle (Houston/Jersey Village) hit a three-pointer to give TLU its largest lead of the second half at 45-22 with 17:39 to play in regulation.
Sul Ross closed within six points with less than a minute to play in the game, but TLU made seven of its eight free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.
Jennifer Munoz (San Antonio/Brackenridge) scored 13 points off the bench to lead a balanced TLU scoring effort. Munoz, a freshman, connected on three of her four three-point attempts.
Kimberly Hagan (Houston/Cypress Creek) and Tamisha Timpson (San Antonio/Roosevelt) scored 12 and 11 points, respectively. Hagan grabbed five rebounds and recorded five steals. Timpson led TLU with 11 rebounds.
Doyle dished out a game-high seven assists for the Bulldogs. She also posted nine points and two steals.
TLU finished the game with 17 steals. Madilyn Caran (Yorktown/Yorktown) had five steals, seven points and three rebounds.
Sul Ross turned the ball over 22 times and made just 33.3 percent of its total field goal attempts. The Lobos scored 18 of their 41 second-half points at the free throw line.
DeShonna Hill paced the Lobos with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Lizbeth Pereyra added 17 points and eight rebounds.
TLU continues its West Texas road trip with a 1 p.m. game Saturday at defending national champion Howard Payne. HPU defeated TLU 62-58 in Seguin last Saturday.
