RICHARDSON, Texas – The 25th-ranked University of Texas at Dallas Comets opened a 28-point lead in the first half and cruised to an 88-66 win Thursday over the Texas Lutheran women’s basketball team.
At the UTD Activity Center, the Comets (10-2, 7-0 ASC) shot 55.3 percent from the field in the first half and led by as many as 37 in the second half.
TLU (4-7, 2-5 ASC) battled in the second half to make the score respectable. TLU outscored the Comets 47-41 in the final 20 minutes. TLU junior shooting guard Jessica Macias (San Antonio/Harlandale) scored all 15 of her points in the second half.
Tamisha Timpson (San Antonio/Roosevelt) led the Bulldogs with 18 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks. Timpson was 8-for-12 from the field and 2-of-5 from the three-point line.
Amy Doyle (Houston/Jersey Village) added 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting. She hit two three-pointers, dished out two assists and collected two steals.
The Bulldogs went to the free throw line 22 times in the second half and connected 16 times.
Texas-Dallas starters Lyndsey Smith and Lauren Hale each scored 15, and fellow starter Kori Joyce added 12. Tarneisha Scott scored 12 points off the bench.
TLU was hurt by 28 turnovers. The Comets turned the ball over 21 times, but they produced 20 assists.
TLU continues conference play Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Ark.
