BETHANY, Okla. – Texas Lutheran’s Courtney Haskell set a new school record for blocks in a game, with nine, and just missed a triple-double in leading the Bulldogs to an 82-62 win Monday over Southwestern Christian (Okla.).
Haskell, a sophomore from San Antonio (Southwest), hit 10 of her 13 field goal attempts and tossed in a free throw for her 21 points. She added 12 rebounds.
Haskell eclipsed the TLU single-game block record by one. The single-game block record was held by TLU Hall of Famer Dawn Revels, who blocked eight shots against Mary Hardin-Baylor during a game in the 1991-92 season.
Haskell already has 29 blocks in 10 games this year (2.9 blocks per game). The TLU individual record for blocks in a season is 40. As a team Monday against Southwestern Christian, the Bulldogs blocked 14 shots.
The Bulldogs (4-6) also received 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks from freshman Tamisha Timpson (San Antonio/Roosevelt).
After going winless in the 2007-08 season, Texas Lutheran has won three of its last four games in 2008-09.
The TLU freshman point-guard tandem of Amy Doyle (Houston/Jersey Village) and Jocelyn Langford (Omaha, Neb./San Antonio Clark) recorded a combined 12 assists. Doyle dished out seven assists with just one turnover, and Langford registered five assists.
Southwestern Christian, a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association, dropped to 6-5 with the loss. The Eagles received 19 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists from Kaylee Davis.
TLU was out-rebounded by nine in the first half but hit the glass hard in the second half. The Bulldogs grabbed nine more rebounds than the Eagles in the second half. TLU senior post Madilyn Caran (Yorktown/Yorktown) grabbed 11 rebounds, including four on the offensive glass.
The Bulldogs hit nine three-pointers against Southwestern Christian. Courtney Goodman (Fort Worth/Keller Central/Southwestern Oklahoma), Pearl Kafoa (Keller/Keller Central), and Langford each hit a pair of three-pointers.
TLU returns to American Southwest Conference action this Thursday with a game against the University of Texas at Dallas. Game time in Richardson, Texas is set for 5:30 p.m. The women’s game will have live stats and a webcast on www.tlu.edu/athletics.
