AUSTIN – St. Edward’s posted an 89-55 non-conference victory over the Texas Lutheran women’s basketball team Saturday at the SEU Recreation and Convocation Center.
The Hilltopper’s Charron Sumler led all scorers with 21 points. Sumler hit eight of her 10 field goal attempts and five of her six free throw attempts.
St. Edward’s, a member of the NCAA Division II, improved to 6-7 overall with the win.
TLU, a member of the NCAA Division III, had its two-game win streak snapped. The Bulldogs dropped to 3-6 overall.
First-year forward Tamisha Timpson (San Antonio/Roosevelt) registered 16 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals for the Bulldogs.
First-year post Rebecca Valdez (McAllen/McAllen) was the only other Bulldog in double figures. Valdez scored 10 points and added two rebounds and two blocks.
TLU held St. Edward’s to 36.8 percent shooting from the field, but TLU managed just 32.4 percent from the floor, including a 9-for-34 performance (26.5 percent) in the first half.
The Bulldogs were out-rebounded by 19, 58 to 39. SEU’s Sara Head collected 10 rebounds. TLU’s Courtney Haskell (San Antonio/Southwest) also grabbed 10 boards.
TLU committed 27 turnovers, seven more than the Hilltoppers.
Saturday’s game was the first of seven consecutive road games for TLU. The Bulldogs travel to Bethany, Okla. for a 7 p.m. game Monday against Southwestern Christian University.
