SEGUIN, Texas – The Texas Lutheran women’s basketball team cut a 19-point deficit down to three midway through the second half but could not get past East Texas Baptist in a 65-59 loss Saturday.
In TLU’s Memorial Gymnasium, Kimberly Hagan (Houston/Cypress Creek) led the second half surge for the Bulldogs (1-5, 0-4 ASC). Hagan scored all of her team-high 14 points in the second half.
Hagan’s two free throws with 12:28 to play in regulation pulled TLU within three points, 39-36. The Bulldogs trailed 32-17 at the break but started the second half with a 19-7 run. Hagan had nine points in the TLU streak.
ETBU weathered the TLU surge with scoring from Satara Harrell. The junior forward scored 12 points in a six-minute stretch that pushed the Tigers’ lead from three to 10.
TLU cut down the Tigers’ lead to five with 45 seconds to play on a three-point play by Hagan, but the Bulldogs could close no further.
ETBU improved to 2-5 overall and to 2-3 in the conference with the road win.
Harrell led the Tigers with 25 points on 8-of-11 shooting. She was 9-for-10 from the free throw line, and she grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Tigers’ Candy Vallo added 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Karlee Wilson contributed 13 points and seven rebounds.
TLU’s Courtney Haskell (San Antonio/Southwest) scored 11 and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds. She also added two rebounds.
Bulldog freshmen Amy Doyle (Houston/Jersey Village) and Rebecca Valdez (McAllen/McAllen) each scored nine points. Doyle dished out four assists and had five steals. Valdez grabbed five rebounds.
The Bulldogs were hurt by a horrid shooting first half. TLU hit just five of its first 41 field goal attempts and one of its first 16 three-point attempts.
The shooting improved for the Bulldogs in the second half. TLU was 13-for-35 from the field (37.1 percent) and 5-of-15 from the three-point line (33.3).
The Bulldogs continue conference play Monday with a 5:30 p.m. game against LeTourneau.
