TLU women hit road block in Mississippi

CLINTON, Miss. – The Texas Lutheran women’s basketball team dropped to 0-3 in American Southwest Conference play with an 89-61 road loss Monday to Mississippi College.

At MC’s A.E. Wood Coliseum, Mississippi College improved to 6-1 overall and to 3-1 in the ASC. The Lady Choctaws led by as many as 33 in the second half after opening a 26-point lead, 48-22, at halftime.

TLU (1-4, 0-3 ASC) crept within 18 with 11:09 to play in regulation after a Jocelyn Langford (Omaha, Neb./San Antonio Clark) jumper. MC called a 30-second timeout and came back onto the court with a 23-8 run.

Brittany Dukes led MC with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting. She also grabbed eight rebounds and had two steals. Rosemary Green and Anna Patterson added 17 and 12 points, respectively.

Anesia McBride had a team-best nine rebounds for the Lady Choctaws. MC out-rebounded TLU by 18, 56-38.

TLU had three first-year players – Kelcy Albracht, Tamisha Timpson, and Pearl Kafoa – each score nine points. Albracht (Hart/Nazareth) hit a three-pointer and was 4-for-4 from the line, and Timpson (San Antonio/Roosevelt) made a team-high four field goals, grabbed five rebounds, and recorded three steals. Kafoa (Keller/Keller Central) hit three three-pointers on six attempts and added a rebound and an assist.

Sophomore post Courtney Haskell (San Antonio/Southwest) led the Bulldogs with nine rebounds (four on the offensive glass). Haskell also had six points and three blocks. Langford added seven points, five assists and a steal, and Deandra Haggray (San Antonio/MacArthur) contributed eight points, four rebounds, a steal and an assist.

TLU hit 21 of its 65 shot attempts (.323). The Bulldogs were 7-of-21 (.333) from the three-point line and 12-of-20 (.600) from the foul line.

MC was 30-for-67 (.448) from the field, 3-of-13 (.231) from the three-point line, and 26-of-42 (.619) at the free throw line.

TLU committed 27 turnovers, six more than the Lady Choctaws.

TLU returns to its home court at Memorial Gymnasium for Saturday’s conference game with East Texas Baptist University. Game time is set for 1 p.m. For Saturday’s game, TLU will have live stats and a live audio webcast from www.tlu.edu/athletics.
