SEGUIN, Texas – The Texas Lutheran women’s basketball team snapped its 31-game losing streak with a 71-64 non-conference win over Texas College, Tuesday evening in TLU’s Memorial Gymnasium.
First-year guard Kim Hagan (Houston/Cypress Creek) hit a three-pointer with the shot clock at one to give TLU a five-point lead (69-64) with 1:18 to play in regulation. Hagan added two free throws in the final seconds to account for the final margin.
Hagan finished with a career-high 19 points in the Bulldogs’ win. She added seven rebounds, an assist and a steal.
TLU (1-2) had not won since Feb. 3, 2007 – in an American Southwest Conference road win over Concordia Texas. TLU is a member of the NCAA Division III.
The victory also was the first collegiate win for TLU’s first-year head coach Roxanne Long.
Texas College dropped to 0-7 with the loss. The Steers play in the NAIA’s Red River Athletic Conference.
TLU out-rebounded Texas College 62 to 39. First-year forward Tamisha Timpson (San Antonio/Roosevelt) and sophomore forward Courtney Haskell (San Antonio/Southwest) each grabbed a career-best 15 rebounds. Haskell collected 10 of her rebounds on the offensive glass. Timpson had 11 defensive boards.
Haskell also matched her career-best in blocked shots, with five.
First-year guard Jennifer Munoz (San Antonio/Brackenridge) scored 16 points before fouling out late in the second half.
TLU trailed by as many as 13 in the first half and faced a 45-36 deficit at the break.
The Bulldogs limited Texas College to 19 second-half points. The Steers shot 8-for-31 from the field and 2-of-12 from the free throw line in the final 20 minutes. Texas College made 16-of-22 shots from the foul line in the first half.
TLU started the second half with an 8-2 run, capped by a Hagan three-pointer that brought TLU within one with 17 minutes to play. But the Bulldogs did not take their first lead of the second half until a three-pointer by Munoz at the 11:52 mark.
The Bulldogs led by as many as six, at 64-58, with 4:35 to play. Twice Texas College moved within two points. British Thomas’s jumper at the 2:11 mark made the TLU lead two, at 66-64.
Thomas led all scorers with 28 points. She played all 40 minutes and collected four rebounds, two assists and three steals. She made 12 of her 16 shot attempts.
Robin Olanya and Candice Smith added 13 and 11 points, respectively, for the Steers. Jessica Williams led Texas College with 13 rebounds. Olanya added nine boards.
TLU returns to ASC play this Saturday and Monday with road games at Louisiana College and Mississippi College, respectively.
