Women's basketball opens ASC play with home loss

SEGUIN, Texas – Melissa Thomas scored 31 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the University of Texas at Tyler to an 82-64 American Southwest Conference victory over Texas Lutheran, Saturday afternoon at TLU’s Memorial Gymnasium.

Texas-Tyler improved to 3-1 overall and to 1-0 in the ASC.

TLU dropped to 0-2 and to 0-1 in the ASC.

Thomas hit 12 of her 23 field goal attempts and made four three-pointers. She added two assists and two blocks.

Becky Taylor and Marzetta Shepard added 17 and 15 points, respectively. Taylor led all players with 17 rebounds. She had seven offensive rebounds.

Texas-Tyler out-rebounded TLU 59-45 and forced 29 TLU turnovers.

TLU collected 32 Texas-Tyler turnovers but was hurt by 28.4 percent shooting. TLU was 21-for-74 from the field and 8-for

Jennifer Munoz (San Antonio/Brackenridge) led TLU with 14 points. Munoz hit her first three three-point attempts. Courtney Haskell (San Antonio/Southwest) added 11 points and 11 rebounds.

TLU freshman point guard Amy Doyle (Houston/Jersey Village) dished out nine assists.

TLU returns to action Tuesday with a home game against Texas College. Game time in Memorial Gymnasium is set for 6 p.m.
