SEGUIN, Texas – The Texas A&M International Dust Devils hit 11 three-pointers and forced 32 Texas Lutheran turnovers in a 94-66 non-conference win Monday over the Bulldogs in TLU’s Memorial Gymnasium.
Valerie Villanueva came off the bench to hit five three-pointers and scored a game-high 20 points for the Dust Devils (3-1), members of the NCAA Division II.
The NCAA Division III Bulldogs dropped to 0-1. The game was the first contest for new TLU women’s head coach Roxanne Long.
Villanueva led four Dust Devils into double figures. Jasmine June and Mary Tobias each scored 16 points, and Beth Hampton added 12. June collected a team-best 10 rebounds.
TLU received 14 points, 12 rebounds, two blocks and two steals from freshman forward Tamisha Timpson (San Antonio/Roosevelt). Timpson had six offensive and six defensive rebounds, and she hit four of her nine field goal attempts.
Bulldog sophomore forward Courtney Haskell (San Antonio/Southwest) added 12 points, four rebounds and two blocks. Freshman shooting guard Kim Hagan (Houston/Cypress Creek) contributed 11 points, six rebounds, a block and two steals.
TLU shot 28.8 percent from the field for the game and was 7-of-35 (20 percent) from the three-point line.
TAMIU finished the game with an overall shooting percentage of 41.8 percent. The Dust Devils hit 50 percent of their shots and six of their 11 three-point attempts in the second half.
TLU out-rebounded TAMIU 59-46 and led in offensive rebounds 26 to 18.
The loss for the Bulldogs extended TLU’s overall losing skid to 30 games. TLU has not won a women’s basketball game since Feb. 3, 2007.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday with an American Southwest Conference game against the University of Texas at Tyler. Game time in TLU’s Memorial Gymnasium is set for 1 p.m.
