SEGUIN, Texas – Despite being limited to four healthy runners, the Texas Lutheran women’s cross country team hosted and participated in the TLU Invitational on Saturday morning.

Before the heavy rains hit the Seguin area, the women’s race of the TLU Invitational was completed.

The men’s race was canceled after strong thunderstorms pounded the course, located on the TLU campus.

Trinity won the women’s team race with a score of 30. University of Texas-Permian Basin was second, with 48, and Texas A&M International finished third, with 56.

Concordia Texas placed fourth with a team score of 89.

TLU could not field a full team with only four runners. The Bulldogs have been hit hard by illness and injury over the past week.

TLU junior Tiffany Wetz raced on Saturday and posted a ninth-place finish in the 6K race. Wetz crossed the line in 25 minutes, 14.3 seconds. She was nearly a minute faster than last week’s result on the same course.

First-year runner Samantha Gutierrez bettered last week’s time by more than two minutes. Gutierrez was 19th with a time of 26:33.8.

Bulldogs Ravin McCallum and Amber Martinez also were faster when comparing times from the Texas DIII Championships, the event held at TLU last week. McCallum was 90 seconds faster from last week, and Martinez was 36 seconds faster.

The Bulldogs run next at the University of Dallas Invitational (in Irving, Texas) on Saturday. The women’s race is set for a 9 a.m. start.
