SEGUIN, Texas -- McMurry's Carla Lewis finished second overall and led her McMurry teammates to the women's cross country team title at the Texas DIII Championships, contested Saturday at Texas Lutheran University.
Lewis completed the 6,000-meter race in 24 minutes flat to trail only Trinity's Caitlin Masse to the finish line. Maase won the individual title with a time of 23:09.
McMurry tallied 43 team points and finished ahead of the University of Texas-Tyler (65) and Trinity (73).
Southwestern (92) and Texas Lutheran (108) took home fourth and fifth, respectively.
Nine total teams competed in the women's race.
TLU received an eighth-place finish from junior Tiffany Wetz (Spring Branch/Bracken Christian/UT-San Antonio) and an 11th-place showing from freshman Chelsea Johnson (Katy/Cinco Ranch). Wetz crossed the line in 26:06, and Johnson posted a time of 26:25.
Senior runner Jacqueline Allen (Katy/Mayde Creek) and freshman Samantha Gutierrez (Converse/Judson) were third and fourth among the Bulldogs. Allen and Gutierrez received times of 28:18 and 28:43, respectively.
Junior Sarah Patterson (Yoakum/Yoakum) and junior Hillary Davidson (China Spring/China Spring) followed closely behind Allen and Gutierrez. Patterson and Davidson compiled times of 28:49 and 28:57, respectively.
Junior runner Ravin McCallum (San Antonio/Roosevelt) rounded out the Bulldogs' top seven with a time of 29:19.
TLU runs at home again next week when it hosts the TLU Invitational. The women's race is set for an 8 a.m. start, with the men's race beginning at 9 a.m. The TLU Invitational, like the Texas DIII Championships held Saturday, will take place entirely on the TLU campus.
