SEGUIN, Texas – Texas Lutheran senior men’s tennis player Cody Fuller is a candidate for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors after being named to the Academic All-District VI First Team for the Men’s At-Large category.
Fuller (Cedar Park/Cedar Park) was selected to the 11-man Academic All-District VI Team for the college division, which includes NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA colleges and universities in a six-state area. The six states represented in District VI are: Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
Academic All-America honors for the Men’s At-Large program will be announced June 9. Eligible sports for the Men’s At-Large program include: fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling.
Fuller, a recent graduate of TLU with a 3.83 cumulative GPA, was a 2009 ASC West Division Second Team selection after winning his final four matches (all in conference play) at No. 2 singles.
A tennis team captain, Fuller also was an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI First Team selection in 2006-07. He missed 2007-08 eligibility for an Academic All-District nomination because he studied in China for the 2008 tennis season.
Fuller was a two-time ASC Academic All-Conference selection and was the 2008-09 ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete for men’s tennis after a vote of the conference’s 15 sports information directors.
For the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program, members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) nominate student-athletes and vote on district and national ballots to select Academic All-District and Academic All-America winners. First Team All-District award winners advance to the national ballots.
To be nominated for Academic All-District and Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must have a minimum GPA of 3.30, be a starter or important reserve, and be a sophomore, junior or senior. Transfers must complete one full year at the new institution before becoming eligible for nomination.
CoSIDA selects Academic All-America teams in 12 programs: football, women's volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's track & field/cross country, women's track & field/cross country, men's at-large and women's at-large.
