Eddie SalazarHead CoachMen's Soccer(830) 372-6807esalazar@tlu.eduOn July 17, 2006, Eddie Salazar was announced as the new head coach for Texas Lutheran men’s soccer. Salazar made the leap to head coach after three years as the lead assistant for Michael Alderson, who coached the Bulldogs for the previous nine years. Alderson resigned from the men’s soccer head post to take the head coaching job for the TLU women’s soccer program.
With Alderson moving into the women’s coaching position, Alderson and TLU Director of Athletics Bill Miller looked immediately to Salazar to lead the men’s program.
“Eddie Salazar was an outstanding player for us here at TLU, and he has been an asset to our men’s program as an assistant,” said Miller. “We’re happy that Coach Salazar will be leading our men’s soccer program. I believe he will do a fine job and lead us into the upper tier of the American Southwest Conference. I know Eddie has a great commitment to TLU and to the men’s soccer program. I know his commitment to both TLU and the men’s soccer program will pay dividends for the entire TLU Athletics program.”
In 2006, Salazar guided the Bulldogs to a two-game improvement in the overall record and to a one-game improvement in the conference standings. Salazar coached the ASC Offensive Freshman of the Year Alan Garza, who scored 14 goals for the Bulldogs in the 2006 campaign. Salazar also had the Bulldogs in most every contest despite a thin bench and relatively young roster. TLU pushed Hardin-Simmons, the eventual conference champion, to overtime at TLU’s Gustafson Field. Garza and Marcus Pais were named to the ASC All-Conference Third Team, and Bulldogs Taylor Williams, Aldo Garza and Chris Gerhardt were named to the ASC Honorable Mention Team.
Salazar played four years for Alderson with the Bulldogs. As the team’s central defender and three-year team captain, Salazar was a huge part of the Bulldogs’ rise to the top of the American Southwest Conference. Salazar was a part of the Bulldogs’ 2001 and 2002 ASC West Division championships and played a central role in TLU’s 2002 ASC Championship and NCAA Division III Tournament appearance.
The Bulldogs won the 2002 ASC Championship with two ASC Championship Tournament victories at TLU’s Gustafson Field. The Bulldogs then made their first-ever appearance in an NCAA Division III tournament game and hosted No. 1-ranked Trinity University (Texas) at Gustafson Field. The Bulldogs lost to Trinity 3-0 and ended the year with a sterling record of 14-4-2.
Salazar lettered and started in all of his four seasons at TLU. As a defender and a three-year captain, Salazar was a two-time ASC All-Conference selection and a two-time ASC West Division First Team choice. Salazar graduated from TLU in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology.
In addition to his assistant coaching duties at TLU, Salazar also coached at Central Catholic High School in San Antonio. As head coach, Salazar led Central Catholic to a 24-2-1 record in the 2005-06 season, Salazar’s only season with the high school team. Central Catholic advanced to the TAPPS 6A state semifinals in the 2005-06 season.
Salazar, a graduate of San Antonio’s Robert E. Lee High School, has been a trainer for the Classics Elite Soccer Academy in San Antonio. He has trained the Under-13 Boys Division I and Under-14 Boys Super II teams.
