DALLAS – The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs will take a 10-shot lead into Tuesday’s final round of the American Southwest Conference Men’s Golf Championship Tournament after team scores of 293 and 288 on Monday.

The Bulldogs, the defending conference champions, trailed Hardin-Simmons by one shot after the morning round before posting the low round of the tournament, the 288, in the afternoon round.

The winner of the ASC Championship Tournament receives the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships. TLU has finished 12th in the NCAA Division III in the past two seasons, 2005 and 2006.

The even-par team score by TLU was delivered in the second round by counting Tanner Carter’s 67, Ryan Kiel’s 70, A.J. Vesey’s 75, and Neil Simpson’s 76.

Both rounds Monday were played at the 7,044-yard, par-72 course at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in Dallas.

TLU’s Kiel, a freshman from Seguin (Seguin), is the two-round leader at 5-under after posting a 69 and a 70. His junior teammate Carter (Boerne/Boerne) used the 67, the low round of the tournament, to move into second alone at 2-under.

Hardin-Simmons golfer Travis Brown is in third alone after rounds of 75 and 68. He is four shots behind Kiel and one shot behind Carter. Brown is three shots clear of two golfers – Patrick Palmer of LeTourneau and William Browne of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Vesey, a junior from Sugar Land (Clements), posted a 77 and a 75 to secure a tie for 15th. Junior golfer Jonathan Swisher (Laredo/Alexander) also stands 15th after rounds of 72 and 80.

Another junior, Neil Simpson (Boling/Boling), moved up to a tie for 24th with a 76 in round two after an opening-round 78.

The Bulldogs’ two-round total of 581 is 10 shots ahead of Hardin-Simmons (591) and 20 shots in front of third-place Mary Hardin-Baylor (601).

McMurry (605), the University of Texas at Dallas (608), Mississippi College (609), LeTourneau (620) and Louisiana College (641) round out the field.

The Bulldogs are attempting to repeat as ASC champions for the first time in school history. A team in the ASC has not repeated as the men’s team champion since Hardin-Simmons in 1999 and 2000. The 2000 championship for the Cowboys capped a four-year championship run.

TLU won the 2006 title and finished as the ASC runner-up in 2004 (by one shot) and in 2001 (by seven shots).
