LONGVIEW, TEXAS – Texas Lutheran men’s golf team posted the low round of the LeTourneau Spring Classic and rallied for a fourth-place finish Tuesday at Pinecrest Country Club.
Four Bulldogs – A.J. Vesey (71), Jonathan Swisher (73), Ryan Kiel (70) and Tanner Carter (75) – posted scores at or below 75. The 289 team score on Tuesday was the low round of the tournament by six strokes.
TLU placed fourth with a team score of 909. TLU nearly caught Hardin-Simmons (908) for third and McMurry (906) for second.
Texas-Tyler won the tournament with an 897 final team score. Texas-Tyler’s Dean Rodgers captured the individual title with rounds of 70, 75 and 73 for a 218 total.
Vesey and Swisher tied for sixth for the Bulldogs. Each golfer finished with a 226 total.
Kiel and Carter placed 13th and 15th, respectively. Kiel improved 11 shots, from an 81 in round two Monday, to shoot a 70 on Tuesday. Carter fired his low round of the tournament, a 75, on Tuesday.
Neil Simpson round out the Bulldog squad with a tie for 28th. TLU individuals Tyler Kuhn (T24th), Kerry Ondrovik (31st), Eric Waggoner (41st) and Patrick Gunter (53rd) also competed at the tournament.
The Bulldogs will face many of the same teams next Monday and Tuesday at the American Southwest Conference Championships in McKinney, Texas. TLU, the defending ASC champion, has advanced to the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships in each of the last two seasons. The Bulldogs finished 12th nationally in 2005 and 2006.
