SEGUIN, Texas – Eleventh-ranked Texas Lutheran rallied from seven shots down in the third round to win the TLU John Bohmann Memorial Invitational, Tuesday afternoon at the Golf Club of Seguin.
With a varsity five lineup that included the core of last year’s 7th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championships, the Bulldogs tied Tyler Junior College at 857. But the Bulldogs claimed the title on the tiebreaker, the score of the fifth golfer on each squad.
TLU’s fifth golfer, Neil Simpson (Boling/Boling) tied for 27th with three solid rounds of 73, 74 and 75.
The Bulldogs were led Tuesday by sophomore Ryan Kiel (Seguin/Seguin), the defending American Southwest Conference champion. Kiel fired a tournament-best tying, 5-under par 67 and stormed into second place overall. Kiel drilled a 50-foot birdie on the 18th hole to cap the round.
Kiel’s birdie putt on the last hole forced Tyler JC’s Blaine Weiterman to drain an eight-foot putt to secure the individual title. Weiterman closed with a 71 after opening with scores of 68 and 67 on Monday.
TLU also received outstanding play from freshmen Jeff Rein (Garden Ridge/Central Catholic) and Andrew Long (Seguin/Seguin), who placed eighth and 14th overall, respectively. Rein posted scores of 70, 70 and 74, and Long had rounds of 72, 75 and 71.
Returning All-American Tanner Carter (Boerne/Boerne) tied for 16th after rounds of 69, 75 and 75.
TLU second team member A.J. Vesey (Sugar Land/Clements) tied for 11th after a final round 79. Vesey entered the final round in second place after Monday’s scores of 70 and 68.
