Walton, Bulldogs post 73-70 win over Lobos

SEGUIN, Texas – Nate Walton scored 13 of his game-high 17 points in the second half as the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs handed Sul Ross State a 73-70 conference loss Thursday in TLU’s Memorial Gymnasium.

Walton, a senior from Houston (Westside), grabbed an offensive rebound and then nailed a three-pointer on the same possession to give TLU a five-point edge with 3:58 to play.

Walton then added four free throws and a lay-up in the closing two minutes as the Bulldogs’ held off a Sul Ross rally.

TLU made eight free throws in the final minute to off-set three three-pointers made by Sul Ross in the final 48 seconds.

TLU eclipsed its win total from a year ago by winning its fourth game of 2008-09. The Bulldogs moved to 4-13 overall and to 4-10 in the American Southwest Conference West Division.

Sul Ross dropped to 4-13 overall and to 4-10 in the ASC West.

Junior post Tyler Wanek (Fredericksburg/Fredericksburg) scored 14 and pulled down a game-best 11 rebounds. Seven of his rebounds came on the offensive glass.

Sophomore guard Jonathan Hutton (Austin/Lake Travis) and freshman wing Isaac Williams (San Antonio/Wagner) contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively. Hutton was 6-for-6 from the free throw line, and Williams added five rebounds, three blocks and three steals.

TLU’s Brad Howard (Houston/Cypress Creek) posted 10 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Roderick Gunter led Sul Ross with 15 points. Henry Flores added 11 points and eight rebounds.

TLU goes for a second consecutive win Saturday when it hosts Howard Payne. Game time is set for 3 p.m. in TLU’s Memorial Gymnasium.
