CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – Chris Williams scored 27 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in leading the University of the Ozarks Eagles to an 86-78 victory Saturday over the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs.
Williams, the reigning American Southwest Conference East Division Player of the Week, hit seven of his 12 field goal attempts and two of his three three-point attempts. He also connected on 11-of-15 free throw attempts.
Tony Daniels added 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles. Andre Williams scored 10.
Ozarks improved to 7-6 overall and to 5-3 in the American Southwest Conference.
TLU dropped its fifth straight contest and fell to 2-9 overall and 2-6 in the ASC.
TLU held a four-point lead, 43-39, at the half and increased the margin to 10, 55-45, early in the second half. The Bulldogs still led by seven (60-53) with 13 minutes to play, but a 12-0 run by the Eagles over a three-minute span secured the lead for good.
The Bulldogs’ Tyler Wanek (Fredericksburg/Fredericksburg) hit back-to-back jumpers to pull TLU within two, 70-68, with 5:16 to play. And after two Daniels free throws, TLU point guard Malcolm Dotson (LaMarque/LaMarque) assisted on Isaac Williams’ (San Antonio/Wagner) fastbreak lay-up that again brought TLU within two, with 4:33 remaining.
But Daniels continued the scoring for Ozarks by hitting consecutive buckets. Jeremy Clark’s three-pointer at the 2:28 mark put the Eagles up by nine. The Bulldogs did not get within seven the rest of the way.
The Bulldogs put five players in double figures in scoring. Williams scored 15 points and grabbed five rebounds. Nate Walton (Houston/Westside) and Wanek added 14 and 13 points, respectively. Walton also grabbed five rebounds.
Dotson and Brad Howard (Houston/Cypress Creek) contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively. Dotson collected four assists and four steals. Howard led the Bulldogs with six rebounds.
The Bulldogs were out-rebounded 41-32. Of Ozarks’ 41 rebounds, 18 came on the offensive glass.
TLU hit 50 percent of its field goal attempts (27-for-54), and Ozarks shot 44.3 percent (27-for-61) from the field. Eleven of Ozarks’ field goals were three-pointers. The Eagles were 11-of-27 from the three-point line. TLU hit just three of nine shots from beyond the arc.
TLU’s conference road schedule continues this Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. game against McMurry University in Abilene, Texas. Seguin radio station KWED 1580 AM will have the broadcast. Fans online can catch the KWED broadcast at www.seguintoday.com.
