SEGUIN, Texas – Mike Russell poured in 25 points as the Anderson University Ravens scored an 84-79 road victory over Texas Lutheran, Sunday afternoon at TLU’s Memorial Gymnasium.
Anderson, an NCAA Division III program out of Anderson, Ind., improved to 7-3 overall with the non-conference win.
TLU, also a member of the NCAA Division III, dropped to 2-7 overall with its third straight defeat.
Russell, a 5-foot-10 senior guard, hit six three-pointers and eight of his 17 total shots. He added five rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals.
Andrew Jones and Rodney Holliday each scored in double figures for the Ravens. Jones added 16 points and two steals, and Holliday scored 11 points with five rebounds and two steals.
TLU received 22 points off the bench from sophomore guard Jonathan Hutton (Austin/Lake Travis). Hutton was 6-for-12 from the field, with a three-pointer, and he hit all nine of his free throw attempts. He also collected four rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
First-year guard Michael Flores (Spring/Klein Collins) and sophomore wing Brad Howard (Houston/Cypress Creek) added 15 and 13 points, respectively. Senior guard Nate Walton (Houston/Westside) scored 11.
TLU trailed by as many as 13 in the second half and by 12 with just under seven minutes to play. But Hutton scored 11 of his 22 in the next four minutes to pull the Bulldogs within one point on two separate occasions.
TLU closed within one point a third time on a three-pointer by Flores, but the Bulldogs never took the lead from the Ravens.
TLU, trailing by three, had possession with 17 seconds to play. Flores’s three-point attempt to tie was blocked by Russell with five seconds remaining. Brock Morrison grabbed the rebound and then hit two free throws to clinch the win.
