Schreiner men escape with win over TLU

SEGUIN, Texas – Trevor Connor’s jumper with six seconds to play proved to be the game-winner in Schreiner University’s 69-67 American Southwest Conference victory over Texas Lutheran, Thursday evening in TLU’s Memorial Gymnasium.

Nate Walton’s off-balance three-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark, and Schreiner escaped with its first victory of the season.

Schreiner improved to 1-7 overall and to 1-5 in the ASC.

TLU dropped to 2-6 overall and to 2-4 in the ASC.

Schreiner opened a 17-point lead at the half and led by 18 early in the second half.

TLU chipped away at the Mountaineer’s lead and tied the game at 67 on a Josh Scott runner in the lane. Scott finished the contest with nine points, nine rebounds, three blocks and three steals.

The Bulldogs trailed by 17 with 11:10 to play and by 10 with 5:27 remaining. The Bulldogs closed the final 11 minutes of regulation with a 27-12 run.

TLU’s Tyler Wanek was instrumental in the Bulldog’s final surge. Wanek (Fredericksburg/Fredericksburg) had seven points and three offensive rebounds down the stretch. Wanek scored 19 total points and finished with seven rebounds (five on the offensive glass).

Jonathan Hutton (Austin/Lake Travis) was the other Bulldog in double figures. He scored 11 and had three assists. Nate Walton (Houston/Westside) added nine points and two assists. Brad Howard (Houston/Cypress Creek) contributed eight points, six rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Ralph Turner scored a game-best 22 points for Schreiner. He was 8-for-14 from the field. He added nine rebounds and seven assists. Connor recorded 10 points and four rebounds.

The Mountaineers shot 47.2 percent from the field for the game and held TLU to a shooting percentage of 39.3. The Bulldogs were 8-of-32 (25 percent) in the first half.

The Bulldogs also were hurt by a sub-par performance at the free throw line. TLU made just 16 of its 27 free throw attempts. The Bulldogs were 11-for-20 in the second half from the line.

TLU returns to action on Dec. 28 with a 3 p.m. home game against Anderson (Ind.)
