SEGUIN, Texas – Jonathan Hutton scored Texas Lutheran’s final six points, including the game-winning lay-up with three seconds to play, to lift the Bulldogs to a 63-61 American Southwest Conference victory Saturday over East Texas Baptist.
In TLU’s Memorial Gymnasium, Hutton (Austin/Lake Travis) hit three consecutive shots on drives into the lane. The sophomore guard’s first shot pulled TLU even at 59-59, and his second gave TLU a two-point edge, at 61-59.
After ETBU’s Corvaniel Johnson hit a jumper with 18 seconds to play to tie the game at 61, the Bulldogs brought the ball up the floor and called timeout. Hutton received the ball on the ensuing inbounds pass, drove past a defender and avoided the help defense to hit the final bucket.
Hutton, the reigning ASC West Division Player of the Week, scored 10 of his 11 points and was 5-for-5 from the floor in the second half.
TLU improved to 2-4 overall and to 2-2 in the ASC.
ETBU dropped to 4-5 overall and to 1-4 in the ASC.
TLU led nearly the entire ball game. ETBU took its first lead of the afternoon with a Josh Chamber lay-up with 4:29 to play in regulation. TLU led by as many as 11 in the first half and by three at the half.
The Bulldogs had a seven-point lead, at 54-47, with 7:57 to play following a free throw from Nate Walton (Houston/Westside). ETBU surged to its first lead (55-54) with a free throw and lay-up from Chambers, a three from Dennis Jones, and a dunk from Johnson.
Brad Howard (Houston/Cypress Creek) hit a three on TLU’s next possession to put the Bulldogs back up by one, at 57-55.
Howard, a sophomore wing, finished with 12 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. He was 5-for-11 from the field and 2-for-7 from the three-point line.
Walton added 10 points and four rebounds, and Michael Flores (Spring/Klein Collins) and Tyler Wanek (Fredericksburg/Fredericksburg) each scored eight.
Walton, a senior shooting guard, entered Saturday’s game needing seven points to hit the 1,000-point mark for his career. Walton scored his 1,000 point on a three-pointer late in the first half. Walton now has 1,003 points.
Jacob Turnipseed led ETBU with 13 points. He added four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Jones added 11.
ETBU out-rebounded TLU by 10, 47-37. Jeremiah Pojah collected 10 boards for the Tigers.
TLU committed just 11 turnovers in the game and forced ETBU into 21 turnovers. The Bulldogs had 10 steals.
TLU plays another home conference game Monday when it hosts LeTourneau at 7:30 p.m.
