SEGUIN, Texas – The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs opened the 2009 American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament Series with a 10-1 win over the University of the Ozarks on Friday.

At TLU’s Katt-Isbel Field, the Bulldogs captured game one of the best two-of-three series with 15 total hits and with seven innings from freshman ace Brad Orosey (Houston/Cypress Creek).

TLU needs one win Saturday against Ozarks to advance to the double-elimination round of the conference tournament. The Bulldogs have never lost a two-of-three series in the conference tournament, and Friday’s win moved TLU to 8-0 all-time against Ozarks.

Orosey worked out of trouble in the first two innings before settling down to retire outs against 16 of the final 18 Eagles he faced. Orosey moved his record to 10-1. He entered Friday’s game tied with two others for the national lead in wins for the NCAA Division III. Orosey struck out six and overcame five walks. He allowed just three hits and the one earned run.

Five Bulldogs had multi-hit games against the Eagles, and TLU’s Drew Farr (Taylor/Taylor), Cody Miller (New Braunfels/New Braunfels), and Chris Siniff each delivered a pair of RBI.

Ryan Nokelby (Santa Fe, Texas/Santa Fe) recorded three hits and scored three times. Miller also tallied three hits.

Jeremy Macklin (Austin/Bowie/Huston-Tillotson) scored three times and stole a base for the Bulldogs, and Kyle Harvey (Houston/Christian) added two runs and two hits.

Jonathan Cox, a sophomore from Commerce, Texas, made just his third start of the season for Ozarks. Cox (0-1) allowed seven runs (six earned) in 5-1/3 innings of work. He struck out two, walked four and hit a batter.

Jeremiah Steinert (Sugar Land/Dulles) and Tom Hembree (Burnet/Burnet) pitched the final two innings for TLU and did not allow a run.

Saturday’s game two of the series is set for an 11 a.m. start. If necessary, game three of the series would begin 30 minutes after game two. Seguin radio station KWED 1580 AM will broadcast all TLU baseball playoff games and have audio webcasts on www.seguintoday.com. Live stats are available for all TLU games at www.tlu.edu/athletics.
