ALPINE, Texas – The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs kept a one-game lead in the American Southwest Conference West Division with 8-5 and 9-2 road victories over Sul Ross State, Saturday afternoon at Kokernot Field.
TLU improved to 22-11 overall and to 11-4 in the ASC West. Sul Ross State dropped to 4-29 overall and to 3-12 in the ASC.
TLU swept all three conference games from Sul Ross. The Bulldogs took a 13-0 win in Friday night’s game, also at Kokernot Field.
TLU senior catcher Chris Siniff (San Antonio/Judson) gave the Bulldogs some breathing room in game one, the seven-inning contest of the conference doubleheader. Siniff’s hit a two-run single with two outs in the seventh as TLU held a 6-5 lead.
Tom Hembree (Burnet/Burnet) took over for starter Travis Staggs (Elmendorf/Southside/Western Texas JC) in the fifth inning and gave the Bulldogs 2-2/3 innings of one-hit relief.
Staggs took the pitching win and improved to 5-1. Hembree earned his first save.
Ryan Nokelby (Santa Fe/Santa Fe) hit his fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot in the third inning that gave TLU an early 4-0 lead. Nokelby collected two hits and scored three times.
In game two, TLU jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings and led 8-0 through five innings. Kyle Harvey (Houston/Houston Christian) hit the first pitch of the game out of the park to jumpstart the four-run first frame.
Jeremy Macklin (Austin/Bowie/Huston-Tillotson) made his first start of the season and pitched five shutout innings. He allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out four. Macklin added two hits and two RBI.
Chris Green (Austin/Bowie/Concordia Texas) doubled twice and drove in two runs.
TLU travels to Georgetown, Texas this Tuesday for a 5 p.m. non-conference meeting with Southwestern University.
