RICHARDSON, Texas – In heart-breaking fashion, the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs watched late leads slip away Saturday in 14-13 and 10-9 road losses against the University of Texas at Dallas.
The two wins Saturday gave Texas-Dallas (6-3) a three-game series sweep of the Bulldogs (6-5). Texas-Dallas won 13-6 in a single, 9-inning game on Friday.
TLU led 13-3 in the fifth inning of Saturday’s first game, scheduled for seven innings. Brad Orosey (Houston/Cypress Creek) retired the first two batters on strikeouts, but the third out of the inning would not come until 11 runs and two TLU pitching changes later.
TLU failed to score in the sixth and seventh innings. David Shaw (1-0) picked up the win in relief, and Adam Spinn notched the save with a perfect ninth.
Randy Lorber and Adam Hudec each drove in three runs for the Comets in game one.
For TLU, Kyle Harvey (Houston/Christian) and Jeremy Macklin (Austin/Bowie/Huston-Tillotson) each homered. Harvey drove in four runs, and Macklin plated two. Andy Griffith (Loyola Beach/Riviera Kaufer/Cisco JC) and Chris Green (Austin/Bowie/Concordia Texas) also drove in a pair of runs.
Game two, originally scheduled for nine innings, was shortened to seven innings because of the time length (three hours) of game one. In the second game, the Bulldogs took a 4-0 lead and then battled back from deficits of 5-4, 7-4, and 8-6.
TLU grabbed a 9-8 lead with a three-run sixth inning. In the frame, Harvey homered with one out. After an Andrew Femath (El Paso/Montwood/Howard JC) double, a Macklin single and a Drew Farr (Taylor/Taylor) walk, Ryan Nokelby (Santa Fe/Santa Fe) doubled into right field to score two runs.
But the Comets rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Jacob Starnes started the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Neal Gorden, who drove in three runs in game two, singled through the left side to bring home Starnes. With Gordon at second on a passed ball, TLU intentionally walked Lorber. The next batter struck out before Jared Smith singled home the winning run.
