SEGUIN, Texas – Texas Lutheran and Austin College opened their 2009 collegiate baseball seasons with a doubleheader split Saturday at TLU’s Katt-Isbel Field. Austin College won the first game, 6-2, and TLU grabbed the second game, 10-0.
Austin College right-hander Cory Stevens was dominant in game one. He held the Bulldogs scoreless and with only one hit until the sixth inning. Stevens struck out seven and allowed two earned runs.
Brian Buehler was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI for the Kangaroos in game one.
Austin College out-hit TLU 11-3 in the opening contest.
In game two, TLU broke open a close game with a seven-run seventh inning.
Kyle Harvey (Houston/Houston Christian) sparked the Bulldogs in game two with three hits, two runs and two RBI. One of Harvey’s three hits was a double.
Ryan Nokelby (Santa Fe, Texas/Santa Fe), Clay Childress (Houston/Jersey Village/Eastfield JC), and Andy Griffith (Loyola Beach/Riviera Kaufer/Cisco JC) each had a pair of hits and an RBI for the Bulldogs.
TLU out-hit AC 13-5 in game two.
Travis Staggs (Elmendorf/Southside/Western Texas JC) pitched six shutout innings for the Bulldogs and held the Kangaroos to just two hits. Staggs struck out four and walked just one.
TLU and AC conclude the three-game, non-conference series with a Sunday noon 9-inning game at Katt-Isbel Field.
