Mullin, Franklin lead McMurry to 36-23 win at TLU

SEGUIN, Texas – McMurry quarterback Jake Mullin tossed five touchdowns (four of them to receiver Marcus Franklin) in a 36-23 American Southwest Conference victory Saturday over Texas Lutheran.

At Seguin’s Matador Stadium, Mullin hit Franklin on TD strikes of 12, 20, 37, and 48. The two longest scoring plays between Mullin and Franklin came in the fourth quarter.

TLU closed within a touchdown, at 24-17, on a Quinnten Cleveland (Galveston/Ball) 1-yard run. The TD rush capped an 11-play, 63-yard drive that took 5:30 off the clock.

But McMurry responded with scoring strikes that combined took 2:20 off the game clock. The 37-yarder to Franklin put McMurry ahead 30-17 with 12:12 to play, and the 48-yarder gave the visitors a 36-17 edge with 8:50 remaining.

The Bulldogs added a 37-yard TD strike from freshman quarterback Rocky Huff (Houston/Jersey Village) to senior receiver Jonathon Randle (Prairie View/Waller) with 2:20 to play. The ensuing onside kick by TLU went out of bounds, and McMurry ran out the remainder of the clock.

McMurry won for the fourth straight time under first-year head coach Hal Mumme. McMurry remained in third place in the American Southwest Conference with the victory. McMurry now stands at 4-4 overall and at 4-2 in the ASC.

TLU dropped to 0-7 overall and to 0-5 in the ASC. The Bulldogs have dropped 10 consecutive games dating back to the final three games of 2008. This current 10-game losing skid by TLU ties for the longest consecutive-loss streak in Bulldog football history.

Mullin, a sophomore from Burleson, was 26-for-39 with 264 yards passing against TLU. He did not throw an interception.

TLU quarterbacks Jarret Buchholtz (Luling/Luling/Texas College), Luke Davis (Baytown/Baytwon Christian) and Huff were a combined 11-for-29 with five interceptions, two touchdowns, and 178 yards.

TLU quarterbacks were sacked eight times. Ricky Jimenez had two of the eight sacks for McMurry.

McMurry safety Gene Hudson picked off three of the TLU passes. Hudson added six tackles and a half tackle for loss.

McMurry linebacker Andrew Wallace had 11 total tackles, two tackles for loss, an interception and a sack.

TLU freshman defensive end Chris Kyle (McAllen/McAllen) collected a career-best four sacks against McMurry. Kyle had five total tackles, and all five tackles went for losses. Kyle ended the game with five tackles for 36 yards in losses. The four sacks resulted in 33 yards in losses. He also had two quarterback hurries.

Randle led TLU in receiving with the first 100-yard game of his career. He caught four passes for an even 100 yards. He had a long reception of 39 yards.

TLU’s Steven Thrash (Hubbard/Hubbard) added six receptions for 65 yards with a 10-yard TD pass from Buchholtz.

TLU hits the road for next week’s Halloween showdown with Hardin-Simmons. Game time at HSU’s Shelton Stadium is set for 2 p.m.
