Texas Lutheran and Incarnate Word, former area college rivals from the old Heart of Texas Conference of the NAIA and NCAA Division II, meet for the first time in football this Saturday at UIW’s Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium in San Antonio.
Incarnate Word, a NCAA Division II independent, is in its first year of collegiate football. The Cardinals and Head Coach Mike Santiago bring a record of 3-3 into the 2 p.m. contest.
TLU, a NCAA Division III member from the American Southwest Conference, is in search of its first victory of the 2009 season. The Bulldogs are 0-5 this year and 0-4 in the ASC.
The Bulldogs have lost eight consecutive games dating back to the 2008 season, when the team dropped its final three contests. Out of those eight losses, TLU has been held to seven points or less in five of the games. The Bulldogs’ average points per game in the eight losses is 12.38. In 2009 alone, TLU averages 15.8 points per game.
The Bulldogs are last in the American Southwest Conference in scoring offense (15.8), scoring defense (38.6), total offense (251.6), rushing defense (229.4), defensive interceptions (2), third-down conversion percentage (29.3), and turnover margin (-3.20 per game).
The Cardinals come off consecutive wins for the first time in school history. Two weeks ago, UIW defeated Oklahoma Panhandle State 38-35 in overtime on the road. Last week, UIW won for the second time at Benson Stadium, defeating East Central Oklahoma 38-20. The Cardinals other win of 2009 came in its season-opener against Monterrey Tech (42-39 on Aug. 29).
