Six Bulldogs earn division men's basketball honors

RICHARDSON, Texas - The Texas Lutheran men's basketball team put three players - Brad Howard, Jonathan Hutton and Nate Walton - on the ASC All-West Division Honorable Mention Team, one player - Malcolm Dotson - on the ASC West Defensive Team, and two more players - Michael Flores and Isaac Williams - on the ASC West Freshman Team.
Mississippi College senior forward Bryan Johnson and University of Mary Hardin-Baylor senior guard Tilmon Gaddy were named division players of the year to headline the 2009 American Southwest Conference Men’s Basketball All-Conference and All-Division selections, the ASC office announced on Tuesday (March 3), following a vote of the league’s 15 head coaches.
Howard, Hutton and Walton were the top three scorers for the Bulldogs in 2008-09. Hutton, a sophomore from Austin (Lake Travis), increased his scoring average from last season by 5.5 points per game. Hutton made the move from point guard to shooting guard and averaged 11.0 points. He made 42.4 percent of his shots from the field. Hutton went to the free throw line a team-best 139 times and made 109, for a free throw percentage of 78.4.
Walton, a four-year letterman at shooting guard, ended his Bulldog career as the 21st all-time leading scorer in school history. Walton (Houston/Westside) scored 254 points (an average of 10.6 per game) in his senior season and finished his career with 1,195 points. In 2008-09, he made 85.1 percent of his free throws (57-for-67) and shot 34.2 
percent from the three-point line (27-for-79).
Howard (Houston/Cypress Creek) rebounded from early-season shooting troubles to average 10.3 points and 4.7 rebounds. The sophomore wing posted team-highs in field goals made (93) and three-pointers made (30), and he tied for the team lead in blocks (16). Howard was second on the team in steals (33), assists (45) and rebounds (112). Howard was an ASC West Freshman Team selection a year ago.
Dotson, the team's sophomore point guard from LaMarque (LaMarque), earned a spot on the defensive team by being among the conference leaders in steals. He averaged 2.33 steals per game and had a season total of 56. Dotson also averaged a career-best 6.8 points and dished out 50 assists.
The Bulldogs' top two freshmen - Williams and Flores - each played in all 24 games in their first seasons with the team. Williams averaged 9.5 points per game and made 46.1 percent of his total field goals. He also averaged 4.4 rebounds and 1.4 steals. Flores (Spring/Klein Collins) averaged 7.1 points per game and hit 42 percent of his field goal attempts. Flores made 24 three-pointers and collected 38 assists and 32 steals.
Texas Lutheran produced a 6-18 overall record in 2008-09. The year marked a three-win improvement over the previous season. The Bulldogs were 6-15 in the American Southwest Conference and finished in a tie for seventh in the division. The Bulldogs are coached by Tommy Jones, who concluded his season season with the team.
